End-user Requirements on Proper Disposal of Waste Sealed Radioactive Substances

End-users of sealed radioactive substances shall ensure the proper disposal of their radioactive substances when they no longer serve the dedicated purpose of use. The relevant disposal requirements are stipulated in the conditions of the respective licences and exemptions granted by the Radiation Board (“the Board”). In order to further delineate the proper method on the disposal of these waste radioactive substances, the Board has updated the relevant requirements. The licensees or exemption holders concerned shall return their waste sealed radioactive substances to the original manufacturer. They shall obtain prior approval from the Board if they intend to dispose of their waste sealed radioactive substances by returning them to alternative suppliers or manufacturers of the same type of sealed radioactive substances outside Hong Kong. They shall also exercise due diligence on ensuring that the waste radioactive substances are transported in accordance with the relevant international transport regulations as required by the Board.
